Grand Lucayan Waterway is next to West Grand Bahama District and is located in West Grand Bahama. Grand Lucayan Waterway has a length of 13.41 kilometers.
Here is a little history on the Grand Lucayan Waterway, it is a little shortcut to the Little Bahama Bank. The Waterway was the largest engineering feat ever attempted in the Bahamas. This 1960 dream of opening the heartland of Grand Bahama to development, as well as providing a direct route between Florida and the Abacos, cost $26 million. There is a hotel that a developer built but it was either poor timing or marketing but the development failed to achieve takeoff speed. It is a canal system with some of the homes are abandoned and some have revived. It has many narrow side basins, turning areas and secondary, branching canals.
However, if you are caught in weather, the area remains a wonderful harborage when caught in an unexpected blow.
We are now in Mangrove Cay for our overnight a little island to protect us. There is a little sandy beach we might explore tomorrow in the dingy.
Ross and I played backgammon which I haven't played in a long time, it was fun we both won a game.
Here is Skye our friends from Bimini, we are following them through the Canal.
Someone is fishing off the little inlet here you can see their van.
Apparently they were trying to make the island a resort, here is a rundown hotel they never finished.
Here is a home that is actually occupied. which alot of them are deserted.
Leaving The Grand Lucayan Waterway, we made it through without any problems. Here is Skye again.
